How to Spot a Trend Before It Peaks

The best time to publish on a topic is while interest is rising and few people have covered it well. Here is how to read the signs.

Every trend moves through the same stages. It is emerging when a handful of people start talking about it, rising when interest grows week on week, at its peak when everyone is covering it, and declining once the audience has moved on. The creators who win consistently publish during the rise — early enough that little has been said, late enough that people are already searching.

Two numbers tell you where a topic is. The first is demand: how many people are looking. Page views on the topic's encyclopedia article and discussion on forums are good proxies, because they measure people choosing to read, not publishers choosing to write. The second is supply: how much is already being published, which news volume captures well.

A topic is worth your time when demand is growing faster than supply. Contren shows this as momentum (is interest accelerating?) and content gap (how much room is left?). High momentum with a high gap is the sweet spot. High momentum with a low gap means the topic is real but crowded — you will need a sharper angle rather than a faster post.

Watch the week-on-week change rather than the absolute size. A small topic growing 40% a week will usually give you more reach than a huge topic that is flat, because the audience is still looking for answers and the feeds are still hungry for it.

Finally, check that the interest is broad. A spike on one site can be a single viral post; the same topic moving on two or three independent sources is a trend. That is why Contren only rewrites a score when at least two sources agree.

In short
  • Publish during the rise, not at the peak
  • Prefer growing demand over large but flat demand
  • A high content gap means room for a simple, clear explainer
  • Look for agreement across two or more sources
